WOW, you're swifter than a speeding bullet! ;-) Thanks for this great synopsis.
(BTW, "No Name" near bottom of your list was Mel Lawrenz, Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, WI)

That brings up memories! Yes. My brother gave me a copy 20 or 30 years ago - haven't thought about that book for a long time. Don't even know if I still have it, but it was an excellent read.

Gimmick-centered Christianity, program-centered Christianity, which-ever-way-the-wind-blows Christianity, entertainment-centered Christianity, heaven-minus-hell Christianity will always have limited success in creating true Disciples of Christ! The ancient Tabernacle’s focus was three-fold; reverential sacrifice, prayer, and worship. The center of which was the Presence of The One who inhabited The Holy of Holies. Today, most churches have removed The Eucharist Tabernacle from the center of the church; many have even removed The Bible from the altar. We need to return Christ to the Center, raise Him up in the Eucharist, and He will draw all people to Himself. So many churches are trying to be people-palatable at the expense of making God nauseous. And since He’s the only One who grows true churches; true disciples, it is foolishness, faithlessness to engage in gimmickry, etc.

This whole series has been very helpful, Steve... thanks! (Haven't had time to think out comments for some of the other posts in the series yet... looking forward to going back & digesting them more.) I think the order in this chapter is important and builds on itself: v. 5b: Humbling ourselves toward each other, v. 6 and under God's hand & v. 7 casting our anxiety on Him come before v. 8 being of sober spirit & on the alert, and v. 9 resisting the devil. You mentioned James 4:7, which seems to put it in a nutshell: "Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." It's hard (impossible?) to resist the devil if we're not first submitting to God... I need to remind myself of that more...
