Reading Proverbs – 7:4 Love Wisdom

Call wisdom your sister, greet understanding as a familiar friend;”– Prov 7:4

This chapter presents Wisdom as a woman who has an opposite. Where Wisdom is spoken of as a high and moral woman, there is an alternate companion we can choose – one who is an adulteress (v 5) dressed as a prostitute (v 10). The ways (teachings) of Wisdom lead to God; they are not always easy, but they are always good. The ways of the other are smooth (v 5), loud and wayward (v 11), cheating (v 19), seductive (v 21) and immensely popular (v 26). They also lead down to death (v 27).

It’s easy to focus on the things we shouldn’t. So much of what’s available to us can lead us away from God’s higher Truth. God calls for self-discipline; the world calls for being happy. God calls for giving; the world calls for getting. God calls for serving; the world calls for being served. God calls for sacrifice; the world calls for self-gratification. These things are so at odds with each other that it should sound alarm bells, but we’ve become deaf to their stridence. Here’s a call to get back on track.
