No-Church Sunday

October 12th, 2008 by Steve

Just had this great idea! What do you think about having a ‘no church’ Sunday? You know – close all the churches in the entire country for one day, just to get the point across to the world about how important church is – what it brings to the minds and hearts of people; how the worship changes us; how the giving energizes the community. It would be one definite statement, wouldn’t it? Good idea?

… Nope, can’t do it. No matter how nifty and impacting it seems. For the church to leave the world unhelped and alone for even an instant (let alone a day) is the absolute antithesis of the church representing God. For the Bride to ignore the Groom’s imperative is dead wrong…and God forbid He leaves any of us alone for any time at all.

How often do we have an idea that seems truly great (or cute, or fun, or cool) … but we don’t think about seeking God’s input on it? Sadly, as Christian leaders this is especially likely because we’re always looking for new ways to get the idea across. Sadly in particular, because as Christian leaders we’re the very ones who should be setting the example in listening to Him.

Listening to Him is something I’m trying to do with more deliberation than ever these days, and I’m working my way through some “Twisty, turny little mazes” to do so. (You can imagine who put up the mazes.)
