One book bites the dust…
Back on June 28 I mentioned that I was reading by Hirsch titled The Forgotten Ways, which started off powerfully. Unfortunately the writing gradually became more and more weighed down with an academic approach – the ‘what I’ve found in my experience’ fades out, to be replaced with ‘what I theorize about things’. Little pictures start appearing that really don’t help my understanding of the issue. I struggled on – I really did – but at page 122 I gave up.
I’m afraid I never made it to the bits about Liminality, Communitas, the liquid church or “adaptive vs. Operational leadership” – the dense text, strange pictures and complicated tables killed it for me.
On a broader scale, I’ve come to realize that trying to proselytize with theories instead of witness rings the death-knell for the persuader, be he evangelist or teacher. Witness, on the other hand, is an immensely powerful tool. If I, as a Christian, were actually to use the tool instead of talking about what a good tool it is…
